When someone violates our trust, breaks a sacred relational contract, or inflicts profound emotional pain, our instinct is often to erect a fortress of resentment. We replay the betrayal in our minds, cataloging every detail of the injustice. In the immediate aftermath, this response feels protective. Bitter indignation promises to act as armor, ensuring we are never caught off guard again. Yet, as time passes, the armor begins to rust against our own skin, growing heavier and more painful than the original blow. In relational psychology and interpersonal neurobiology, resentment is recognized not merely as a moral failing or a passive emotional state, but as an active, high-energy physiological state.
